The Japanese Laurel house plant is a highly adaptable evergreen shrub that is natively found growing along moist rocks in shaded parts of China, Korea and Japan. Also commonly referred to as Crotofinolia, this plant is characterized by its foliage, which grows in great abundance when taken care of properly. The leaves themselves are a deep green, paired with a heavy accent of golden yellow. Female Laurels tend to possess a speckling of gold, while the gold in male variants appears more frequently.
Native to shaded forest regions in several parts of Asia, the Japanese Laurel is capable of adapting to a number of different environments. Among these environmental conditions, it can withstand dry soil, pollution and salt winds, which are generally no good for plants. In line with this plant’s affinity for breaking the mold set by other houseplants, the Japanese Laurel enjoys being placed in light levels ranging from full sun to partial shade.
This plant is capable of blooming, but does not produce large flowers like some of its houseplant counterparts. Instead, it offers small, red-purple flowers during the spring months. In the fall, female Laurels are capable of growing red berries as well, which are completely edible and have a somewhat bitter taste.
The Japanese Laurel carries with it a warning, however: ingesting any parts of the laurel other than its berries can result in minor illnesses, such as vomiting. While not a major issue, try to keep your Laurel out of the hands of pets and small children.
