Also known as the Maranta Leuconeura, the Prayer Plant is a perennial houseplant that is most notable for its highly animated foliage. Native to Brazil, the West Indies and other regions of Central and South America, it offers all the advantages that are commonly found in tropical houseplants, such as sturdiness and vibrant foliage. Its leaves are generally a bright green, with smaller dots of a deeper green traveling down each leaf’s surface. Additionally, the leaves’ veins often appear as a dark red, contrasting the green and causing the foliage as a whole to pop. Of course, when it comes to the foliage, color and appearance are only the tip of the iceberg. At night, the Prayer Plant’s leaves curl upward and in toward each other, creating the appearance of praying hands and giving this plant its most popular nickname. Then, in the morning, the leaves reach out once more to absorb sunlight. This system is fairly unique to the Prayer Plant, and you’d be hard-pressed to find it in any other houseplants. While it is a durable plant, you still need to stay on top of its watering and feeding schedules. In order for your Prayer Plant care to be successful, you need to make sure that it enjoys a weekly watering session. Also, make sure to fertilize frequently during the growing months, so that its foliage can reach its full potential. If you follow its care guidelines properly, you’ll end up with one of the most impressive houseplants on the market today!
