Nephrolepis is a gorgeous plant that has earned itself a multitude of nicknames. Fishbone fern, Tuberous Sword fern, Tuber Ladder fern, Erect Sword fern, Narrow Sword fern, and Ladder fern, are all popular names for Nephrolepis, but this plant is most commonly referred to as a Boston Fern.
These plants prefer to live in moist soil, but are incredibly resilient and only require watering once per week. Boston Ferns thrive in bright, indirect sunlight. A shaded place in a room with a south-facing window will provide this plant with ample sunshine without risking any scorched leaves.
If you share your home with some four-legged friends, Nephrolepis makes a fantastic alternative to other ferns as it is completely non-toxic to both cats and dogs.
These impressive plants require weekly attention, but are well worth the effort, as they have powerful purification qualities. Boston Ferns are capable of removing more Formaldehyde from the air than any other type of fern and even made it on NASAs list of the top 10 air-purifying plants.
Nephrolepis is capable of growing between 1-3 ft, but a 6 inch pot will keep it to a manageable indoor size. If you'd like to see your Boston Fern grow larger, simply transplant it to a larger pot.
For a burst of color and enhanced air quality, Nephrolepis is an excellent choice.
