Ficus elastica is appreciated throughout the world for its gorgeous oval leaves and exotic aesthetic, but is famous for the fact that it yields milky-white latex. This latex was previously used to produce rubber and has earned this plant a variety of nick-names. Ficus elastica is commonly referred to as the rubber fig, india rubber tree, or india rubber fig.
This plant is native to regions of Southern Asia such as the Himalayas and parts of Malaysia, but has been naturalized in various locations across the planet. Ficus elastica thrives in temperate, frost-free climates which makes it a fantastic option for your home or office.
Caring for your rubber plant is only moderately difficult. This plant can resist short periods of drought, but prefers a warm, moist environment. You only need to water your ficus elastica a couple times per week with an occasional misting.
The ASPCA does not consider this plant toxic to pets, but can cause mild gastrointestinal tract irritation.
In the wild, these plants can grow up to 50ft tall, but an 8 inch pot keeps them to a manageable size. This makes a fantastic houseplant, but feel free to transfer your ficus elastica to a larger pot if you'd like to watch it reach for the sky!
